The Ritual Of Jolenan


A. The Origin and The Philosophy



Various ways used by the peoples in the world to expressing gratitude to God Almighty, because God has provided sustenance and salvation. Usually the activity is done with p activities, within a specified time. It name is also diverse, there is called selamatan desa/selamatan village, merti desa /village merti, alms of the earth, etc. The same thing done by the people of Somongari Village, Kaligesing District. They are held a village merti ritual with the name "Jolenan" .Thousands of people come from various places, to witness the celebration, which is held every two years. “Jolenan” is a magnet for the community to attend witness. The activity, as an effort to raise the village of Somongari as a tourist village. From various activities the ritual of the village, "Jolenan" is the biggest and most popular in Purworejo.The real meaning of what is contained in the ritual, which has been running dozens or even hundreds of years ago. "Jolenan" ritual is essentially an expression of gratitude to God Almighty, who has provided abundant fortune, by harvesting the living plants in his garden. "Jolenan" comes from the basic word “jolen”, short for the word “aja lalen” (javanese), or “do not forget” (english). This sentence contains the meaning of reminding the people of Somogari Village to not forget the God as the nature creator and to gratitude the ancestors who have trying to establish the village. "Jolenan" is celebrated on Tuesday, the Wage market/Pasaran Jawa (The day when the market is crowded in java), Sapar month, on Javanese Calendar, every two years once.

B. The Ceremony and Utillity




"Jolenan" is realized in the form of a rope made of woven bamboo (ancak) covered with woven young palm leaves and shaped like a mountain. meaning, the rectangular below, illustrates the relationships of fellow human beings in the world. Then the more conical, it is intended all the activities in this world, eventually united to worship the Gods creator. The mountain contains rice cone, three roasted chicken, various vegetables , bananas, along with side dishes. Then the outside is decorated with fruits and snacks. Various fruits are the result of the harvest of the village community. Small meals made from raw rice and flour (starch). This gives meaning as a result of the village Somongari. Every rukun tetangga  (RT) send two “jolen” (mountain from a bamboo contains), so the number reaches 48 pieces.Then the “Jolen” is paraded from the eastern end to the western end of the village. It is meant to be evenly so that the blessings of God in the form of doubled harvest can be enjoyed evenly throughout the village. Mountains are borne by two people using soldier clothes. After completion, a great feast takes place, eating tumpeng and the contain inside tumpeng together with the people who attended, in the yard of the village hall. In the parade, jolenan tradition must accompanied by many arts in the village, such as incling, warokan, horse braid, dolalak, tambourine ,etc.

C. The Villager beliefs


"Jolenan" celebration is an expression of gratitude to the ancestors who have bothered to set up the village. In the folklore that is believed people of Somongari Village, the founder of his village named Lukajaya. He comes from a place called Loano Village, the son of the Beluk or Singonegoro. Once upon a time ,there happened “Pagebluk” (Big disasters that make the village in a crisis). To overcome the “Pagebluk”, Singanegara, ordered his son-in-law, Lukajaya, to rule the village which is now known as Somongari Village. Besides, there is still a figure of Somongari Village which is still a role model, namely Kedau Kediri-Kedini. The person, said to be from Yogyakarta Hadiningrat who lived and died in Somongari Village. He is known as a culturalist, with the various local arts. In the celebration is realized by displaying all the existing art. Even the beliefs that exist in the community, every art group that will perform, must visited his grave before show. It is intended to ask permission, so when performing the stage survived the distress. "Jolenan" tradition has been running for generations since hundred years ago. This tradition is based on the belief of the community, as a ritual planting crop that grows in the village. It is expected that after the cultivation, the plants will flourish and bear fruit. In the beginning the activity as a means of burdening mangosteen and durian trees, where both types of fruit tesebut is the main producer of Somongari Village. According to the existing story, mangosteen and durian plants, have been planted since the 1700s. Thus the ritual "Jolenan" is estimated to be held not far from that year. In the celebration besides displaying the existing art, still bring Warokan art from Jatirejo Village, Bagelen Subdistrict. The arts group, originally belonged to Somongari Village residents, but who knows when and how, now belongs to the Jatirejo village. Based on the belief of society, there is still another art that should not be left in the ritual of the village, it is Tayub performances that art must be shown according to belief society, if not, will happen many disasters to the village.
